Many people think of trees as inanimate objects, during the winter months. Communication with the trees around him, especially in winter, was of prime importance to Rhyn. He revered their presence as living creatures, and painted them repeatedly and, with tenacity. Without their foliage, as we see in this magical scene, the artist allows us to share his feelings. As we look at these maples, we are made to feel their flowing shapes, their solid structure and graceful rendition.
