Realistic and museum quality, this study was done on a winter day, where plein air work was prohibitive. Instead of spherical shapes, Rhyn decided to create a still life using, of all things, seafood. He put on the kitchen table two sardines and a sea bream, along with a bunch of oysters. He used the idea of the smooth contour of the dead fish against the jagged shapes of oysters shells. What we end up noticing is the atmosphere. Here, we see cold northern light falling on the dead fish. The light is soft, the work outstanding.
