Volanakis is considered to be the father of Greek Landscape painting. Born and raised in Crete, his scenes depict Venetian buildings, harbour and boat scenes, using a combination of realism and impressionist techniques. Volanakis is a master, when challenged to capture the glowing light of Greece.
